MAGDALENA PARTIES

What are the Magdalena Parties?

The foundation of the city is commemorated through its main festivities, known as Fiestas de la Magdalena and declared as an international turistic interest. It's a nine days part structured from the third Saturday of Lent to the fourth Sunday of the same period. The core of the celebration is called Romeria de les Canyes, in which participates dozens of thousands of Castelló people that every year remember the foundational fact coming back to Cerro de la Magdalena, their ancestors' place. This tradition originally had a penitential tone even today keeps going.

Along to Romeria, Gaiatas (Castelló's exclusive monuments of light) are an important part of the festivities. They parade in the night of Lent's third Sunday and set in several squares during the entire week of festivities.

As a great party, Magdalena day has a great eve. That day the Cabalgata del Pregón takes place as an announcement of the party and turns into a parade in which participate different groups of the city. It's an ethnological demonstration of tradition, folklore and local customs in which also participate several villages of the province.

Throughout the entire week there are concerts, pirotechnical shows (like the recognized, international contest of mascletaes Ciudad de Castelló), bulls faire, parades of Collas' decorated cars, streets theater, open-air dances and several gastronomic acts. Magdalena festivities also has a street circus event, the Animation International Parade or the Party Music International Festival.

Nine intense days that finish the last weekend with the offering to Mare de Déu del Lledó and the Magdalena Vítol (final show that puts an end to a party characterized by the people's high participation).
